Crosthwaite playgroup newsletter: Feb-Apr 2017

Welcome back

Happy New Year everyone! (Okay the newsletter is running a bit late!) We would like to welcome you back and inform you of the latest news from playgroup.

We hope you are happy with playgroup, and the way it is run. As a committee, we welcome all ideas and suggestions and encourage you to share these - please make a note in the Suggestion Book, this is usually next to the register.

Thank you!

Other news

Starting this year, we have decided to discontinue running a nearly new sale.
We found that the time and effort required to organise it did not make the end result worthwhile. We could have increased the percentage going back to playgroup, but we don’t think that would have been fair, especially with the amount of other nearly new sales happening in the area.
Instead we now have an all year-round sale area on our own website which anyone can post things for sale, with no commission cost going to playgroup. For further information either contact Maria or send an email through the link on our website.

Dates for your diary

Half term (20th - 24th Feb)

No usual Playgroup session. However, back by popular demand is our ‘Pancake Party’, celebrating a favourite tradition! The morning of Tuesday 21st February will be filled with the usual playgroup fun & games, bouncy-castle and baking. We will finish off with a lunch for all (children & parents). Additional fees apply (please see poster or ask Maria for details).

Damson Day – Saturday 22nd April

This is the main money-earner for playgroup – it covers the cost of the hall hire!
Each year, we support Damson Day, a very popular local event. Playgroup will run the raffle stall, as well as providing refreshments. This is a worthwhile cause and we hope you can help support it. We will need a few volunteers to carry out the roles on the day, and some substantial raffle prizes too, if possible!
Raffle tickets will be available to buy, and to sell to friends and family nearer the time.

Easter Holidays (8th April – 23rd April)

No Playgroup. An outing or party will be organised, if we have the interest.

For sale!

Welcome to the "For sale" page!

Off the back of our Nearly New Sale, we decided it would be a great idea to give people the ability to sell their unwanted items via our website all year round. I'm sure many of us already use E-Bay, Amazon, Gumtree, and the Kendal Sell and Seek on Facebook, so we hope you find it useful.

We are not using the website to actually take money, so we have disabled the actual e-commerce side of things, but we are using it to list items you would like to clear your house of.

If there is something you would like listed on the website, please email us via the link at the top of the page with:

  1. Picture
  2. Description
  3. Price
  4. Contact details
  5. Nearly new sale ID (if you have one)

Time to clear those cupboards again!

Crosthwaite Playgroup Newsletter: Jan-Apr 2016

Welcome back

Happy New Year everyone! We would like to welcome you back and inform you of the latest news from playgroup.

We are delighted to have plenty of regulars now, many of who utilise the Loyalty Card Scheme, an idea that derived from taking your suggestions into account. You can now save up to £4 a month per child!

We hope you are happy with playgroup, and the way it is run. As a committee, we welcome all ideas and suggestions and encourage you to share these - please make a note in the Suggestion Book, this is usually next to the register.

In 2016, we would like to ensure that the efforts of those who volunteer are evenly distributed amongst us. If you can spare a short amount of time this year to support one of the events run by playgroup, we would be delighted to hear from you. Between us we aim to continue to promote and fundraise for playgroup – see below for forthcoming events.

Thank you!

Dates for your diary

Time to have a clear-out for the spring sale! Playgroup profited £200 from the Autumn 2015 sale, and once again we kindly ask for baby clothes to be bundled together, and all items to be in good condition (0-12 years). Sellers will make 80% of the takings from each sale, and only 20% will be deducted, going directly to the running of playgroup.
For more information, or a selling code contact: Maria at Playgroup, or Emma Metcalfe at Crosthwaite School (015395 68471).

Damson Day – Saturday 16th April

This is the main money-earner for playgroup – it covers the cost of the hall hire!

NEW YEAR, NEW IDEAS!

Suggestion Book

If there is anything you would like to see, or happen differently during Playgroup, please let us know. The book is always available and is usually in the kitchen, or by the register during sessions.

Last year your suggestions were put in place :
- baby area with chairs for breastfeeding
- larger equipment such as cars, bikes & tractors located in the bottom half of the hall
- blankets and cushions for the baby area
- musical instruments used in our singing time
- water and healthier snacks with occasional staggered snack during busy times.

We are looking at having a ‘spring clean’ and sorting out equipment that needs replacing. Again any suggestions of replacement toys & equipment are welcomed.

Monthly Visits

We are hoping that our 1st visitor this year will provide an awareness of Child Safety with additional information on First Aid courses. We hope you will find these visits beneficial and if you would like a particular area covered, we will try our best to find someone to come along. Alternatively, if you know anyone then please let us know. Future visitors we hope to include are a Local Health Visitor and a Massage Therapist trained in Pregnancy Massage.

100 club

At the end of February we will be re-running our 100 club. Costing only £12 for the year!
We draw two names each month for cash prizes, and aim to reach the 100 members mark this year, so  please spread the word. The more members we have, the more money we can give as prizes!

100 Club – 2016!

The first draw of the year will be held at the Nearly New Sale.
1st prize will be doubled, totalling £25.00.
2nd prize will be £10.00.
For the remainder of the year, the prize money will be:
1st prize £12.50
2nd prize £5.00

Website

We aim to keep this up to date to enhance our playgroup and keep you up dated, especially for those who don’t use our Facebook page, with events, yearly calendar, snack rota & mailing list!

Snack duties

We really appreciate everyone who provides healthy snacks and treats for snack time. As our playgroup is expanding, so is the time taken to prepare and tidy up at snack time. We would kindly like to ask for smaller quantities for each child at snack time, with less of an emphasis on cakes! Please don’t feel obliged to go to any great lengths with baking as a biscuit is still a lovely treat! This should be a welcome relief for some parents! As an alternative, could you bake a delicious cake for one of our fundraising events instead?
Extra help when clearing away to help the person on duty will make all the difference too….many thanks in advance!

Display Board

Angela’s next display will be a permanent one to celebrate our children and their special birthday’s. Many of our mums already celebrate their child’s birthday at snack time by bringing along a cake to share with friends. We would be grateful if you could bring along a photo of your child/children to add to our ‘birthday train’ display!

Many thanks for your support,

Crosthwaite playgroup newsletter: Sept-Dec 2015

Welcome back everyone!

We are looking forward to an exciting autumn term; our aim, as always, is to ensure that all of the children enjoy fun games and activities, as well as the opportunity to form friendships.

Thank you to all of those who turned out (in all weathers!) to enjoy the summer trips.  These included several park days at Old Hall farm, Wray castle, Happy Mount Park, Ducky’s Park & Farm and Millerbeck Light Railway. As well as picnics and fun at Brockhole, Sizergh Castle, Ford Park, Lindale park, Staveley Park and Abbot hall & grounds. Thanks go to The Luing Society for funding our trips to Old Hall farm, Wray Castle, Ducky’s park & farm and especially, Millerbeck Light Railway.

Many of us have met new arrivals this summer, and we welcome and encourage all new mums and dads, especially those with new babies, to come along for a FREE taster morning at Crosthwaite Playgroup.  If you are an existing member, please feel free to invite those you know for one of our FREE TASTER SESSIONS. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Crosthwaite Village Hall, 9.30 – 11.30am in term time.

We hope many of you are now benefiting from the LOYALTY SCHEME.  Don’t forget to join up for the  brilliant offer of just £2 per session for over 1’s or 80p for under 1’s or siblings. (10 sessions for £20 or £8). Including coffee, tea and homemade snacks.

We are looking forward to upcoming events, raising money for our playgroup and social occasions! See below for more details…..

Dates for your diary

Night Out – Saturday 17th October, The Punch Bowl, Underbarrow

Join us for a drink or a meal on our next evening out.  A chance to chat and have a night off! Please let Sarah know a.s.a.p. if you want to join us so we can notify numbers.

Nearly New Sale – Baby Bundles & more ! 14th November

This year, we ask for baby clothes to be bundled and sale prices to be reasonably low (for the under 1’s especially, with some exceptions). We hope this will encourage sales, and items will be easier to browse through. Any other ideas to improve the sale are welcome.  We will be asking for helpers soon – if you would like a role, please let Maria, Cath or Sarah know asap!  If you would like a selling code, then contact Mary Hutson (07849377017) or Emma Metcalfe at the school (015395 68471) previous sellers just use same code as last year.

Photographs by Tiree Dawson- Tues 8th, Thurs 10th December

Tiree Dawson will be at Playgroup to take individual and family photographs on the above dates.  We will have a list to add your child’s name to in advance, so look out for this.

Christmas Party – Set for Thursday 17th December

We are looking into the idea of producing packs of Christmas cards this year.  Each pack will include your child’s very own drawing or painting. This means they can send personalised cards to loved ones this Christmas!  We are also considering individual aprons.  Watch this space, and get ready to place orders soon!

Be safe!

Please can we urge you to ensure the outside door is always closed (slamming it shut can cause it to jump back open).  Also, please use the stair gate correctly, and try to keep children out of the toy cupboard at all times; closing the door when it’s not in use will be most helpful. Many thanks.

Always be up to date with Playgroup, join our Facebook page and check out our website…

Many thanks for your support, Cath Elliott, Sarah Probert, and Maria Cervetti

Sunday's Duck Day!

A big thank you to all those who helped to raise funds in one way or another!

Whether it was a generous contribution of a prize for our Tombola, taking time out to help on our stall, or simply just buying some of our lovely cordial made by the children.

It was a very successful day enjoyed by all who came down to join in the fun!

Crosthwaite playgroup newsletter: May-July 2015

Introduction

Well it’s that time again that I inform you on the latest news from Playgroup. We are delighted that we have so many regulars now and that they are utilizing our ‘Loyalty card’ scheme, an idea that derived from taking your suggestions and improvements into account, ‘Every little helps!’.  Pay upfront to benefit from an extra 2 sessions free (£20 for 10 sessions, equivalent just £2 a session!).  We would also like to welcome lots of new mums and their children and hope the word keeps on spreading!

A BIG THANK YOU to all those who helped in any way towards our last 2 fundraisers, our very successful Nearly New Sale and the always Successful Damson Day! Both wouldn’t have been possible without your help in generous donations & help beforehand or your help on the day! With the money combined we have raised enough for a full years running cost of the hall, therefore any further money we make will help towards renovating our resources and equipment ensuring both your children’s safety and enjoyment!

Dates for your diary

Playgroup Mum’s meeting – Thursday 21st May at the ‘Masons Arms’ Cartmel Fell from 8pm

We try to aim to have a meeting once every couple of months to discuss anything that you might think as parents would benefit the playgroup and arrange any forthcoming events which need organising.  We hope you can join us.

Half term (24th- 29th May) – Playgroup Outing at ‘Docker Park Farm, Arkholme, Carnforth, LA6 1AR

After the success of our last trip at Easter and the disappointing news of their closure on 31st May, we have decided to revisit for one last time. We hope you can join us from 10am with Picnic lunch (café is available!).  The cost is £2.50 for adults, £6.50 for over 2’s & under 2’s are free! Family discounts are available (2 adults & 2 children so worth sticking together!) Playgroup will subsidise children over 2, making it equivalent to a usual playgroup session of £2.50!

LAST session before summer!

Weather permitting I thought it would be good to mark the occasion with a picnic at the park after playgroup session. Just bring along some goodies to share & we’ll do a Jacobs join! Alternatively will have it indoors followed by a few games! Hope you can make it!

Summer Holidays (17th July - 5th September)

No usual playgroup sessions, but outings are arranged. Additional list will be available with further details a.s.a.p. We are hoping to do 2 visits a week to relieve the summer holiday blues! A local park trip (possible fee only for parking)  All main visits will be subsidised thanks to ‘The Luing Society’, a fundraising event that Mary & Alec kindly hosted last year and donated funds.

Important safety notice!

It has come to our attention on a couple of occasions that the door to the memorial hall has been left open and children have been left to wonder onto the parking area. Fortunately they were found before wondering onto the road BUT it could have been a very different story!  We take the issue of safety towards you and your children seriously and now have a safety gate between the kitchen and entrance. Please can we urge you to ensure the door is always closed (slamming it shut can cause it to jump back open) and the stairgate is used correctly. Many thanks in advance!

Helping us to make it better!

We hope you are happy with the way our playgroup is run and as a committee of mums we welcome any suggestions and ideas of continuing to improve. We welcome anyone who wishes to help in any way in promoting, fundraising and organising playgroup and any forthcoming events.

Suggestion book

During every session of playgroup there will be a suggestion book available for all parents/carers to write in. If there is anything you would like to see changed, added, happen during playgroup then please let us know and we will do are best to put these in place.  Many of your suggestions have already been put in place such as ‘longer singing & story time with Angela’, ‘Water always available for adults & children throughout each session’,  ‘The safety of our children when the front door is left open’.

Monthly Visits

To enhance our playgroup and provide further support for our playgroup mums/carers each month we will try to have a visitor that will come in to discuss and promote their business which aims to support mother and baby/children. We hope you will find these visits beneficial and if you would like a particular area covered then we will try our best to find someone to come along. Alternatively if you know anyone then please let us know via our "Suggestion Book". Our first 2 visitors have been popular promoting baby slings & real nappies and hope you found these beneficial. Future events we hope to include a Massage Therapist trained in Pregnancy Massage and a consultant in Organic beauty & baby products.

Snack duties

We really appreciate everyone who provides our lovely treats & healthy snacks for our children each session and thank all those who help in addition to this. As our playgroup is expanding then so is the time taken to prepare and tidy up at snack time, we would kindly like to ask for extra help when clearing away to help the person on duty but also making sure that Angela has more time with the children singing and story time at the end of the session

Recipe books

Our popular Treats from playgroup are now available for you to make and enjoy in your own home. Our book has been very popular as they are easy treats for you and your children to bake. We hope to have a new edition soon especially for the summer holidays so don’t miss out! £4 per book!
